A drought tolerant landscape consists of plants that require very little water, or no water, as in the case of Xeriscape plants (once they get established).  There is a surprisingly large number of trees, plants and shrubs that fit this bill.

By getting rid of your lawn and replacing it with low-water-needs shrubs, you will drastically reduce your water usage and a  whole lot of maintenance.  Say goodbye to mowing every weekend in the heat!  If you really love the look of a lawn, consider planting a natural meadow using short grasses and flowers that require less water than conventional lawns and also need no mowing.  Delta Bluegrass (Davis, Ca.) is now offering a variety of native grasses that are no-mow and low water, so you can have an instant low-water lawn rolled in.

When you make the change to a drought tolerant landscape, you will be amazed at the color and texture of your new yard! You will also be amazed at the visitors...your neighbors and the birds, butterflies and healthy insects. Everyone will want to experience the beauty and marvel at how a landscape can look so good, yet need so little work!
