Drought tolerant landscaping is all about planting and gardening with water conservation in mind. A drought tolerant landscape is a landscape that usually does not have grass, unless it has very low water needs such as Buffalo grass, and uses plants that also have low water needs.

There is a common misconception about drought tolerant landscapes and that is the thought that everything would look ‘dry’ and have no color. This is not the case.

A drought tolerant landscape can look very lush! There are many plants that flower and ornamental grasses that lend texture to create a stunning landscape with low water needs.

Also, there are plants that require more water (usually partial shade and shade plants) that can also be used. By switching out overhead sprinklers with a drip system, you cut the water usage drastically.

A drought tolerant landscape can be beautiful, colorful and low maintenance. Many of the plants that require low water and can withstand high heat also attract birds, butterflies and healthy insects, so often by installing a drought tolerant landscape you are also creating a habitat!
